Autoworkers Showcase Their Struggles At Detroit Auto Show- 01/16/13

As auto companies show off their shiny new autos of the future autoworkers were there to showcase the struggles of workers looking for righter futures. Jesse Russell reports.

The Detroit Auto Show not only showed off the future of the auto industry it also showcased the struggles of working people. A series of protests were held outside of the event throughout the week highlighting everything from pushing back against Michigan’s Right-To-Work law to unionizing Nissan plants in Mississippi. Dianne was at the anti-right-to-work rally this weekend and she said people need to stand up to corporate control:

[Dianne]: The first thing is we have to overcome the fear that people have and the media message, and the corporate message that we should all be glad to have a job and it doesn’t matter what conditions those jobs are.

Martin said one of the most important things labor could be doing right now is educating the next generation of workers.”

One autoworker named Martin said one of the most important things labor could be doing right now is to educate the next generation of workers.

 

[Martin]:  If you can continue to educate and try to mobilize not just inside the plant but also outside the plant than I think we’ll be headed in the right direction.
