Coalition of Immokalee Workers take on Trader Joe's

The Florida farmworker rights group Coalition of Immokalee Workers has achieved historic labor agreements over the last decade. Many fast food companies have signed onto their Campaign for Fair Food, which has raised wages and improved conditions for field laborers. Their latest target is an unlikely one: Trader Joe’s—a smaller chain with a focus on organic food. Yet the management’s unwillingness to negotiate triggered a wave of protests across the country. Labor negotiations at a stand still in Los Angeles

Labor negotiations remain at a standstill since grocery companies and representatives for 62,000 Southern California workers began talks a few months ago.The workers have held rallies in Arcadia, Compton and other California locations to call attention to the stalled talks. Why did the Connecticut budget deal blow up?

Connecticut has one of the highest deficits in the country as a percentage of its budget. When the new Democratic governor, Dannel Malloy, came into office in January, he proposed a package of tax increases, budget cuts and state employee concessions to balance the budget. Melinda Tuhus reports on how the agreement with the state's 45,000 public workers blew up.

Weighing the pros and cons of restarting the Mexican truck program

President Barack Obama announced he will re-start a pilot program to extend the North American Free Trade Agreement to Mexican truckers. The original trucking plan was introduced by former President George Bush in 2007. But it was de-funded in 2009 over fears that Mexican truckers entering the country weren’t complying with safety regulations. In response, Mexican officials retaliated by placing an annual $2.4 billion tariff on US goods. Obama’s plan would eliminate the Mexican tariffs and implement new safety regulations for Mexican truckers. Leilani Albano has more on the story.
