Republicans in Congress want to weaken the National Labor Relations Act. They want to amend it with a national so-called Right To Work bill introduced Wednesday.
It attacks unions financially by outlawing union security clauses in collective bargaining agreements. Those clauses - voted on by workers at union shops - require workers covered by union contracts to pay dues or fees to support the collective bargaining efforts.
Nobody gets forced to join a union, that's already illegal.
What these "Right To Work" bills do is weaken unions by letting workers covered by union contracts withhold dues. These laws outlaw the democratic decisions made by workers to form unions and approve contracts that require dues be paid.
Republican Reps. Joe Wilson of South Carolina and Steve King of Iowa are sponsoring the anti-union legislation.
