Poll Shows Overwhelming Public Support For Employee Free Choice Act - 01/09/09

A solid super-majority of Americans support the labor law reform known as the Employee Free Choice Act. The AFL-CIO’s Alison Omens says the Hart Associates poll shows well over 70 percent of Americans back the labor law reform making it easier for workers to join unions free of employer intimidation.

[Omens]: “There's overwhelming public support for the Employee Free Choice Act. Nearly four in five adults - that's 78 percent - favor legislation that would make it easier for workers to bargain with their employers. After hearing of the specific provisions of the Employee Free Choice Act, 73 percent of adults favor the legislation."

The Employee Free Choice Act is organized labor’s top legislative priority. It gives workers the power to freely choose whether to join a union simply by signing a government-certified union card. Right now employers can force a union election when workers are trying to organize. The election process gives the employer the power to intimidate workers with anti-union campaigns. It would also put more teeth into punishment of employers who violate workers union rights. President-elect Barack Obama has endorsed the labor law reform and as a candidate pledged to sign it into law when he becomes president.
