United flight attendants rise up to defend pensions with CHAOS actions - 07/29/05

United flight attendants staged a CHAOS global day of action at United terminals Thursday in defense of their pensions. CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen joined the Chicago picket.

[Larry Cohen] : "A bankruptcy judge can say it's fine for a CEO who's been there two years to protect his four million dollar pension in a special trust fund. Meanwhile, flight attendants who have been flying for this airline for twenty-five or thirty years - their pension goes in the trash
can to save money for the airline. All working Americans, whether they're union or not, need to stand up with these flight attendants and say to this country, to this government, enough is enough. That the needs and retirement security in this case for working people need to be given real value and that we're prepared to fight for it.

United flight attendants spokesperson Sara Nelson de la Cruz says there’s no real financial reason for United to be dumping worker pensions.

[Nelson de la Cruz] : "It's ideological. And we're fighting against that and against a CEO who has kept his pension of $4.5 million dollars untouched while destroying the retirement security of over a hundred thousand United employees."
