Proposed Health Care Reform Won't Provide Funding for AbortionsSubmitted by Jesse Russell on August 16, 2009 - 1:35pm
August continues to be a scorcher for members of Congress as they host town halls around the country and try to highlight the truth of the health care bill being drafted. One common assertion by health care protesters is that the bill contains language that will put taxpayer dollars toward abortions. Not true says Laurie Rubiner, vice president of public policy and advocacy with Planned Parenthood: [Rubiner]: "Nothing could be further from the truth. There is nothing in any of the health care bills that even references abortion, or, for that matter, any other specific medical procedure." A recent study by the Commonwealth Fund found that seven out of 10 women are uninsured or underinsured. Rubiner says Planned Parenthood has a very clear objective with health care reform: [Rubiner2]: "Our message all along has been very simple: Women cannot be worse off under health care reform than they are today." |
