Schiavo case highlights state health care problems, hypocrisy of Bush administration according to Physicians for a National HealWhile the country debates whether or not Congress overstepped it's boundaries by taking on the Terry Schiavo case, some organizations are saying it highlights a deeper problem with the state of healthcare for working people and the hypocrisy of the current administration. Dr. Quentin Young is the national coordinator of Physicians for a National Health Program, [Young1]: This woman is alive because of Medicaid, which the Administration - which convenes the Congress - is trying to reduce sharply and Congress - happily - overruled this cut. But if the administration had it's way, the money that is keeping her alive would disappear and make all of this activity moot. Schiavo's family has been able to keep their daughter alive mostly through money they won in a malpractice suit in 1993. According to the Seattle Times, of the $1 million won in that suit only $50,000 is left to keep Schiavo alive. Dr. Young says if tort reforms being pushed by the administration had been in affect in 1993, Schiavo would not be alive today. [Young2]: You have a little bit of cynicism here. In real life they are curtailing the programs that would allow her to live, even in the state they wish. But in actuality they are seeking maximum public response around this emotional public issue. |
