The Florida AFL-CIO continues to fight a $1.2 billion proposal to build a 61-mile rail line in the state. Dubbed SunRail, the labor organization is concerned under the current wording it could result in non-union workers getting jobs. The Florida legislature is planning to begin discussion on the current SunRail proposal December 3. The Florida AFL-CIO issued a statement on Friday that calls the package “government-enabled union busting.” President Mike Williams goes on to write that the goal of the bill is “to decimate federal railroad protections in Florida’s railroad system, putting the jobs of thousands of railroad workers, their families’ livelihoods and the safety of the riding public in jeopardy.” If Florida passes the bill it could qualify the state for as much as $2 billion in federal money.
