Pennsylvania Supremes Hand Workers A Win – 12/30/09Submitted by Doug Cunningham on December 29, 2009 - 2:55pm
The Supreme Court in Pennsylvania has ruled in favor of workers. Jesse Russell reports: Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that even when lawmakers are unable to push through a budget paychecks should not stop flowing to state workers. In a 30-page decision the court said the federal Fair Labor Standards Act takes precedent over a state constitution that limits funds from being used when no budget has been passed. Pennsylvania’s Governor Ed Rendell “payless paydays” during the budget impasse earlier this year citing the state constitution as giving him the authority to do so. Several labor unions representing the workers filed the lawsuit. The court said in its decision that the law requires the state to make “timely payment of wages.” |
