Jobs Report Expected To Be Better, But We’re Not Out Of the Woods – 01/07/10Submitted by Doug Cunningham on January 6, 2010 - 5:13pm
While some economists are projecting that when job numbers are announced tomorrow we’ll likely see plus or minus 25,000 jobs, but the Economic Policy Institute warned on Wednesday that it won’t mean the country is out of the woods. Jesse Russell reports: This Friday marks the two years since the recession officially started. Heidi Shierholz with the Economic Policy Institute said on Wednesday that while the last few months have seen improvements it hasn’t been enough to signal a healthy growth: [Shierholz]: "I do not expect the December job numbers to be strong. I think they will likely be negative and I think unemployment will stay at 10 percent or rise by a tenth of a percent." According to EPI President Lawrence Mishel positive job growth is a good first step, but in order to see a real turn around in living standards and consumer confidence many more jobs will need to be created each month. [Mishel:] "The difference between 25,000 positive and 25,000 negative won’t matter a great deal and you need to be creating 125,000 jobs a month jus to absorb the new labor force." |
