Building Trades Urge Action on Ground Zero Construction - 03/10/10Submitted by Doug Cunningham on March 9, 2010 - 4:18pm
Nine years since the World Trade Center attacks very little construction has happened at the site. Yesterday union workers who hope to be part of any future construction jobs gathered to call on New York City to start building. Jesse Russell reports: Construction workers gathered at the site of the World Trade Center on Tuesday during lunch for a rally to call on the city to start work on two more office towers at the site. The project has stalled out as the Port Authority battles developer Larry Silverstein over who will finance the two other towers. The Port Authority owns the 16-acres that would be used for redevelopment of the World Trace Center and offered to assist with construction loans, but only if Silverstein can raise $300 million in private funds. In addition, the developer would need to pre-lease one-fourth of Tower Three’s overall office space before the Authority will agree to a loan. If a solution is not reached by Friday an arbitration panel may force a construction plan on the two sides. Speaking at the rally Building Trades Employer’s Association President Louis Coletti said the time has come for a solution: [Coletti]: "Pleading with our partners on this job to sit in a room, lock the doors, don't eat, don't drink and come up with a solution that will benefit everybody." City Council Speaker Christine Quinn called the current situation a “disgrace". [Quinn]: "That nine years after this attack we are still looking at a hole on the ground that we are still fighting this fight." |
