The proportion of low-income families in the U.S. population is going up again after a decade of decline. And that means more children living in low-income families. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, more than one-third of children in the United States live in low-income families and 17 percent live in poor families. Young children are disproportionally affected. Sixty-two percent of Latino children and 60 percent of black children live in low-income families in the U.S.
