UAW "Soldiers of Solidarity" vow to fight Delphi - 01/23/06Submitted by Jesse Russell on January 22, 2006 - 12:43pm
By Doug Cunningham Rank and file Delphi workers, organized as the "Soldiers of Solidarity" are taking it to Delphi today in a protest against concessions at the auto parts giant's Troy, Michigan Headquarters. Gregg Shotwell is a UAW member who works at a Delphi plant in Michigan. [Gregg Shotwell] : "Management is responsible and workers do not need to take concessions. We want to convey the message to workers that we are worth fighting for. We want to convey the message to management that we will fight back, that we are not going to take this silently. GM - Delphi's failure is a result of mismanagement and fraud and workers should not have to pay the price for those crimes. This is not an attack just on Delphi workers, it's an attack on the middle class." Shotwell says hundreds of workers have attended meetings of the Delphi rank and file to talk about Delphi's bankruptcy and its attack on the middle class. Shotwell says GM has the most to lose if workers strike at Delphi since the automaker could go bankrupt in such a strike. And Shotwell says the rank and file is active in this fight because so much is at stake and they want to be sure Delphi and GM knows workers will fight. |
