AFL-CIO President John Sweeney is calling on President Bush to raise the issue of China’s suppression of workers’ rights when Bush meets with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Sweeney says the Chinese government’s “systematic repression” of workers’ rights depresses wages for Chinese workers while allowing unsafe and abusive working conditions. The AFL-CIO says this hurts American workers and businesses by putting the U.S. at an impossible competitive disadvantage that’s costing hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs.
