Economics professor claims no Social Security crisisEastern Washington University economics professor Doug Orr is convinced there’s no social security crisis so nothing needs to be done to “save” it. Orr says those who hate social security are out to gut it – in part to give business a tax cut while dismantling what remains of the social safety net for workers… [Professor Doug Orr 1]: “I think the larger goal of destroying social security is to destroy part of that sense of security for working people in America which will make them much more at the mercy of their employers.” Orr says higher worker productivity plus economic growth will more than pay for full social security benefits for baby boomers. Rescinding the Bush tax cut that Orr says went mostly to the wealthy would strengthen social security. Orr believes privatizing social security is part of a larger anti-worker agenda… [Orr 2] : “This is not an issue that only affects retirement. If they succeed in destroying social security every single worker in the United States, way before retirement, are gonna see the unemployment rate going up. They’re going to see their wages being pushed down. Gutting social security is simply the first step in driving down the living standards of people who work for wages in this country.” Social Security | Posted 01/24/2005 - 9:43am | 1234 reads
