House GOP Learning Common Ground on Immigration Debate Not So Common - 07/07/06By Jesse Russell The House GOP is currently hosting forums across the United States to address the issue of immigration. The forums are intended to help find common ground on the debate, but as shown at one heated forum in San Diego - common ground is scarce. Newly elected San Diego Congressman Brian Bilbray expressed a need for the border patrol to work harder at cracking down on illegal immigrants. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said rounding up illegal immigrants might prove to be more costly then what Americans would be willing to pay: [Baca]: We don't have enough prisons in America or enough local jails in America to incarcerate employers and their workers. Meanwhile immigrant's rights supporters held their own forum down the street where Jerry Butkiewicz, Secretary-Treasurer of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council said immigrant's who contribute to the country, deserve a serious debate on reform: [Butkiewicz]: When people come to this country and they are willing to work hard, and they are willing to pay taxes, and they're willing to abide by our laws, they're willing to contribute to our economy - they have a right to real immigration reform, they have a right to citizenship.
