Death on the highway is still the leading cause of workplace fatalities. In 2005, fatalities at highway construction sites accounted for one out of every four workplace deaths, rising by two percent according to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 1,428 workers lost their lives working on highway projects. In 2004, the number of workers killed due to being struck by vehicles or moving equipment was at 378. That number increased to 390 in 2005.
