Starbucks Union begins Maryland Campaign - 01/23/2007Submitted by Jesse Russell on January 22, 2007 - 4:33pm
By Jesse Russell A campaign launched in New York City to organize Starbucks Workers is expanding to Maryland. Workers at a Starbucks store in Rockville, Maryland announced their membership in the Industrial Workers of the World Starbucks Workers Union early last week. They have issued a list of demands to their manager and district manager including a living wage, secure work hours, and the reinstatement of baristas they say were illegally fired due to union organizing activities. One of the major complaints is that baristas are not offered full time status resulting in the company only offering its acclaimed health care program to 42 percent of its workforce. |
