Congress Begins Debate On Employee Free Choice Act Thursday - 02/28/07On Thursday the House of Representatives is scheduled to debate an important bill that could make it easier for working people to join labor unions. Jesse Russell reports: Tomorrow the house will take up the Employee Free Choice Act - a bill designed to make it easier for workers in the United States to join a labor union if more than 50 percent of workers sign union authorization cards. Errol Hohrein is a steelworker who sought to organize a union at his workplace. He was harassed by management and eventually fired for his organizing activities. He said there are few protections for working people in the United States: [Hohrein]: Labor law in this country is broken. It doesn’t support working people. No matter what the board rules in my case, I will lose. We're on the brink and no ones looking out for us. We need government to do the right thing where working people are concerned. Professor Harley Shaiken specializes in the issue of labor and the world economy. He addressed economic implications of the bill. [Shaiken]: The act allows workers to make an informed voice about whether or not they want a union. But the economic benefits directly address the issue of a vibrant middle class and a stable competitive economy. Congress | USW and PACE | Posted 02/27/2007 - 5:05pm | 420 reads
