USWA Picket Lines Continue in Hannibal, Ohio Despite Ormet's Bankrupcy BidSubmitted by Jesse Russell on December 2, 2004 - 1:20pm
Picket lines continue in Hannibal, Ohio despite seventeen arrests as aluminum manufacturer Ormet, files for bankrupcy. The company is seeking to void labor contracts held by the United Steelworkers of America. [Parker1] "Right now we're in a fight for health care and pensions. They're trying to take our pensions and health care away from our retirees." Jeremy Parker is the vice president of Ohio USWA local 5724, representing half of the 1,300 union workers at an Ormet reduction plant and rolling mill. [Parker2] "This is a fight that's not only going on here at Ormet, it's nationwide. Everytime you look at the paper somebody's taking a pension. We're standing up to them and saying if you don't want to pay us what we're worth and what our retirees have worked their lifetimes for, then there's not going to be an Ormet. I'd rather see that place turn back into a cornfield, than live under those conditions." Working without a contract since August 30th, Ormet employees decided to conduct a work stoppage November 22nd. The union is waiting to hear from a bankruptcy court judge on her plans for reoganization. --- |
