New York has become the most recent state to allow union’s to organize home child care providers. Governor Eliot Spitzer signed an executive order on Friday that would allow the United Federation of Teachers to organize the 28,000 home child care providers in that state. The providers are reimbursed by the state for taking care of children in low-income families. Currently providers in New York City earn on average $19,000 per year. UFT President Randi Weingarten said in a statement, “Any day you can strengthen child care in New York City and improve the lives of 28,000 home day care providers is a great day.” The traditionally teacher’s union has been specifically targeting the organization of the providers in the city and is currently running unopposed for representation.
