Illinois State Workers to Receive Paychecks - for Now - 08/13/07Submitted by Jesse Russell on August 12, 2007 - 5:26pm
Illinois state employees will be receiving paychecks – for now. The state is currently in a budget crisis with the state Senate and House unable to see eye-to-eye on a budget. Without the budget, the state was unable to pay state employees, but a lawsuit filed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees on Thursday led to a court giving Illinois Comptroller Daniel Hynes authority to cut payroll checks. As of Friday two versions of the bill were in the House and Senate – whichever chamber originates the passing budget grants that branch of the legislature authority to override vetoes by Governor Rod Blagojevich. Without a budget in place, school districts are left waiting for millions of dollars just weeks before summer break comes to an end. |
