Camden Yards Day Laborers Push For A Living Wage - 09/05/07By Doug Cunningham A planned hunger strike by workers who clean the Camden Yards stadium – home of the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens - has been postponed until after the Maryland Stadium Authority meets Thursday. Carl Johnson is a former Camden yards worker and communications organizer for the United Workers Association, a human rights group founded by Baltimore homeless day laborers. [Carl Johnson]: “These are poor folks who are day laborers working at Camden Yards." The United Workers Association wants Camden Yards day laborers to get the Baltimore city living wage - $9.62 an hour. The workers have been encouraged by recent comments from Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and Frederick Puddester, Chair of the Maryland Stadium Authority, supporting a living wage. The hunger strike had been scheduled to start on Labor Day. United Workers says they hope that by postponing the hunger strike, the stadium authority can get breathing room required to “come to a just decision and turn words into actions and intentions into commitments.” Posted 09/04/2007 - 3:52pm | 792 reads
