Private Security Guard Labor Contract Effort In Minnesota Escalates - 03/25/08Seventeen security officers and community allies were arrested in Minneapolis on Thursday as they protested for a fair contract. Jesse Russell reports: The most recent target of the security workers seeking a fair contract with five Twin Cities security contractors was U.S. Bancorp. According to WorkdayMinnesota, nearly 100 union members and supporters marched on the lobby of U.S. Bancorp Thursday demanding a contract that includes affordable health insurance. About 800 private security contractors are represented by Service Employees International Union Local 26, and they are in negotiations concerning a contract that expired on January 1. The group representing the five contractors said the most recent rejected contract was the "last, best, final best offer." However, after the sit down strike on Thursday that resulted in 17 arrests, the companies issued a statement saying they are "dedicated to working with its employees and the union" to provide an affordable health plan. Then on Monday morning a federal mediator said the companies have no plans to negotiate at this time. SEIU’s members represent nearly 80 percent of the security guards in the Twin Cities. The union has been authorized to call a strike if necessary. Posted 03/24/2008 - 4:13pm | 225 reads
