Los Angeles March Builds Community Support For Organized Labor - 04/23/08

Janitors, iron workers, teachers, healthcare workers, and actors recently took part in "Hollywood to the Docks" a 28-mile walk from South LA to the Port of Los Angeles. More than 5000 union members and supporters took part in the march. Leilani Albano met participants along the way:

The three-day series of events was part of a citywide effort to strengthen ties among workers and garner support from the community for unionization.

Anthony Cistaro, who is with the Screen Actors Guild, participated in the event.

[Cistaro]: LA's a labor town and the efforts that the labor unions have made in raising their own working conditions help working conditions for everybody.

This year, LA workers are at a critical juncture in organizing, with more than 350,000 workers belonging to 30 local unions re-negotiating their union contracts.

At the same time, over 30,000 workers will continue their struggle to join a union.

Maria Elena Durazo is secretary-treasurer with the LA County Federation of Labor.

[Durazo]: "Luckily there are workers who are courageous enough to say we want to join together and push back, because we want more than a living wage; we want health benefits, we want a retirement plan."
