McCain Flip Flops on "Recession" - 03/10/08

By Workers Independent News

As recently as late February, President George W. Bush has been saying that he doesn’t believe the economy is slipping into a recession:

[Bush]: "I don’t think we're headed toward a recession, but no question that we’re in a slow down."

When it comes to those vying for the position currently held by Bush, he pretty much stands alone. Democratic Presidential contenders, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have made it very clear on the campaign trail and in debates that they believe that the economy is on a downward slope toward a recession. And on Friday, Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain joined the chorus at a townhall in Atlanta:

Judge Alito shows anti-labor tendencies - 11/02/05

By Jesse Russell

That was Representative Bernie Sanders of Vermont criticizing the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. While many are focused on his stance on abortion - many in organized labor are concerned about what appears to be a anti-labor position. In 1996 Alito was the sole dissenter in a case concerning a female hotel employee who complained of sexual harassment. In his ruling Alito sought to raise the bar for the requirements of filing a sex-discrimination claim. During a 2000 suit in Pennsylvania concerning a state employee who was fired for taking unpaid sick leave, Alito said Congress went to far passing the Family and Medical Leave Act and the state was not required to abide by it.

Lawyer says Missouri GOP seeking to undermine states Medicaid program - 10/03/05

By Doug Cunningham

Missouri Republicans -led by Gov. Matt Blunt - are carrying out the most extreme Medicaid cuts in the nation, according to an Illinois attorney trying to stop what he says are illegal cuts aimed at the poorest and sickest people in Missouri. Attorney Thomas Kennedy the state is cutting payments for wheelchairs, hospital beds, breathing aids and other durable medical equipment that more than 300,000 people in Missouri are depending on.

[Thomas Kennedy 1] : "These cuts are unparalleled not just in Missouri but in the United States. I'm not familiar with anyplace where cuts like this have been made. This is unbelievable. And people are suffering like crazy on account of it. And it's illegal. Just plain, dead bang illegal in my opinion."

Bush administration implicated in producing propaganda - 10/03/05

By Jesse Russell

In a report released by the Government Accountability Office, the Bush administration has been implicated in disseminating "covert propaganda" in violation of a United States statutory ban. The report is the result of an investigation into contracts between commentator Armstrong Williams and the education department where Williams was paid to write newspaper columns and make television appearances promoting the No Child Left Behind Act. Also, the auditors called illegal the administrations use of government funds to hire a public relations firm for the purpose of analyzing news articles for the message "The Bush administration or the GOP is committed to education." The report says there is "no use for such information except for partisan political purposes." The Accountability Office report comes with no penalty, but federal law mandates that the violations be reported to Congress.

Antiwar mom who lost son in Iraq interrupting Bush's vacation - 08/08/05

By Doug Cunningham

Cindy Sheehan's son Casey was killed in Iraq. She wants U.S. troops home now. She's outraged that George W. Bush is calling the war a "noble cause". So outraged that she went to Crawford Texas and is camped there to interrupt Bush's vacation and confront him about his statement.

[Cindy Sheehan 1] : "I don't want him to use my son's name to continue the killing. I don't want him to use my family's sacrifice to continue the killing."

Sheehan says the war is immoral, based on horrendous lies and deceptions. And she knows Bush doesn't really care about those killed in Iraq based on her own meeting with him after her son Casey's death.

New York cops picket republican events attended by mayor Bloomberg

Yesterday a bus load of Boston Police officers arrived in New York to help the NYPD picket republican events attended by mayor Michael Bloomberg. Its not lost on the 10,000 police officers protecting Bush's convention at Madison Square Garden that they're working with out a contract due to a republican mayor.

Micheal Palladino, President of the New York City Detectives' Endowment Association,

"The Republicans are here in town and they're going to stand at Ground Zero, and claim victory for the next four years, but it was the police and fire who gave lives there."

Law enforcement officers traveled from as far away as California to support a fair contract.

Electronic voting machine developer, CIBER, major contributor to Republican campaigns

Voting irregularities from the 2000 Presidential election will be on everyone's mind as they go to the polls in November, and suspicion is already condensing around CIBER Incorporated, the makers of new electronic voting machines, over their significant contributions to the GOP. Since 2001, CIBER employees have donated more than $72,000 to Republicans and $3,000 to Democrats. The contributions are legal, but cast a shadow of partisan control over the 30 percent of votes cast by electronic machines this fall. Diebold Election Systems, another electronic voting machine maker has also raised money for Bush's election campaign.

Federal Transit Administration spooks New Jersey transit employees with images of potential terrorism

The Federal Transit Administration sent images of explosions and chemical attacks to workers’ homes in the form of a DVD. The 15-minute video, titled "Warning Signs", depicts theoretical attacks during this year's Republican National Convention. These graphic images unnerved New Jersey Transit conductors who feel they are being asked to play a law enforcement role they never signed up for. Xavier D. Williams, General Chairman of United Transportation Union Local 60’s 1,030 active members, said he was disappointed with New Jersey Transit’s failing to relay security plans for the convention to workers. 280 New Jersey Transit trains carry approximately 60,000 weekday rail riders into New York daily.
