20,000 L.A. School Workers Agree To Four Unpaid Days In Bid To Avoid Layoffs – 11/25/09

Twenty-thousand SEIU Los Angeles school workers are taking four unpaid furlough days to save the school district roughly $7.7 million. The unpaid days will come one day per month between February and May. The SEIU workers agreed to those unpaid days in an effort to avoid lay-offs.

Lede: Labor is coming together for the American Banker's Association’s party in Chicago Tuesday. Doug Cunningham explains.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says the rally is expected to draw thousands of people to protest bank greed and the irresponsibility that nearly collapsed the financial system. Trumka says after being bailed out by taxpayers to the tune of $700 billion, banks still aren’t using their capital to fuel economic recovery for working people. SEIU President Andy Stern says bankers will get this message from labor at the Showdown In Chicago on Tuesday.

“Labor Day”, a new documentary film about SEIU’s role in the 2008 presidential campaign focuses on workers’ efforts to elect Barack Obama. Film maker Glenn Silber.

[Silber]: “There was something happening in the country that I wanted to capture, and I found what I thought was a great, inspiring story in the role of these regular working folks working with their union to go out and try to mobilize themselves and make sure we won the swings states this time to take back their government.”
