Burger royalty may be endangering the price paid to farmers in the fields. According to an Associated Press article published this weekend, Burger King is teaming up with the Florida Growers Exchange to oppose deals that would have fast food corporations pay a penny more for Florida tomatoes. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers was successful in winning deals with McDonald's Corporation and Taco Bell owner, Yum Brands. Burger King and the Growers Exchange are preparing to fight the workers with an antitrust suit, but have yet to explain the grounds and have simply called the wage increase agreements "un-American".

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers have an agreement with McDonald's restaurants and their suppliers that improves conditions for workers in the field. Workers will get a penny more per pound of harvested tomatoes, a stronger labor code of conduct for suppliers and a collaborative effort to monitor conditions for workers in the fields. The Campaign for Fair Food continues as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers takes its 2007 McDonald's Truth Tour to Chicago on April 13th and 14th. It's an ongoing effort to achieve farm worker justice.

More than 9,000 Vietnamese workers who produce McDonald's Happy Meals toys are a little bit happier after a two-day strike last week. A settlement was reached on Thursday after the workers walked off the job over labor abuse allegations. The factory owners agreed to a 10 percent raise and to limit shift's to 10 hours daily, with Sundays off. McDonald's issued a statement saying the company has a very strict supplier code of conduct and that all issues were resolved.
